The suburb of Mokena is roughly 35 miles southwest of Chicago, located off the Moline Expressway (I-80). Mokena has a village motto: "Planned progress ... pleasant living." Basically, that means Mokena is focused on increasing its residential appeal while still maintaining its small-town vibe. This is no easy feat when the suburb is easily one of the fastest growing communities in the greater Chicago area. Mokena was incorporated in 1880 and occupies about six square miles of land. There are currently around 18,000 people living in the village, up over 4,000 since the 2000 census.

A good number of the homes in Mokena were constructed in the 1980s and '90s. The residential pockets of Mokena are comprised of over 1,400 units with 10 brand new subdivisions featuring modest constructions with modern extras and amenities. These new units resulted in an intense population increase that brought thousands to the region. Despite its growing numbers, Mokena's little village charm has remained intact and is one of the community's most desirable characteristics.
Residential and commercial spaces blend seamlessly here, with prime properties tucked away on quiet tree-lined streets. For the most part, real estate in Mokena has stayed affordable with an upscale tinge. The average home sale price in this Chicago suburb was approximately $344,600 in 2006, a 16% appreciation from the previous year. Detached single-family homes range from the high $100,000s for a mid-century, three-bedroom ranch to luxury homes with four, five and six bedroom floor plans for a million+. The condos and townhomes in Mokena offer home buyers smaller accommodations for prices between $115,000 and $400,000.

You won’t find as many dining options in Mokena as you might in surrounding suburbs, but the restaurants here are worth sticking around for. Stoney Point Grill (19031 Old Lagrange Rd, 708-479-9700) is a favorite among locals. The spacious contemporary American bar and grill serves up excellent fish and steak entrées, plus a sizeable wine list and martini menu. It has 45 flat screen TVs for watching sports and a special off-track wagering system for the gambling types who want to bet on their favorite horse. Tequila's (19137 Wolf Rd, 708-479-1639) is a popular Mexican-inspired cantina that also attracts hungry Mokena residents. Authentic tastes and atmosphere are all you need to enjoy this fun little south-of-the-border dining spot.

Mokena offers its residents a bevy of community-minded events. From the Lion's Club Firecracker Dance and the 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza to the Halloween Hallow and the Food and Wine Festival, there truly is something for all tastes in this suburb. In the rare situation that there isn’t an event going on, head over to one of the village’s green spaces. The Mokena Community Park District offers more than 231 acres of open community park space. The Main Park (as it's often referred to by locals) typically hosts the area’s popular events, but is also a great place to simply unwind at the end of the day.
Each year, Mokena hosts a Festival of Elegance in celebration of art, food, wine and automobiles. The event takes place downtown and features family-friendly activities for everyone. Mokena also boasts a fabulous French market on Front Street where you’ll find plenty of European charm and treats. Vendors at the market sell everything from fruits and veggies to arts and crafts. The market takes place every Saturday from late April through late October. Just be sure to get there before noon or you’ll miss out on all the good stuff!
